Lighting: There are many lighting techniques that can be used for boudoir photography. To start with there is Rembrandt lighting, Paramount lighting, Butterfly lighting, Split lighting, Rim lighting and Clamshell lighting. Whichever technique you use, you should understand the interaction of light and shadow on the subject. Unless you are creating a high-key image, be sure that the main subject is the best lit subject in the image. The brightest areas of the image draw the viewer's interest first. The face and areas near the face are usually the brightest parts of the body. Very rarely are the arms, lower legs and feet the brightest parts of the body. Unless it is well planned, having other areas of the image brighter than your subject is usually a distraction. In photographic terms, areas on an image that are so white and bright that the details are washed out are called hot spots. There could be many hot spots on your boudoir model, but having washed out details shouldn’t be among them. When you look at a photograph, ask yourself, “Are there any elements that take your eyes away from the main subject and that are of no interest?” Then ask yourself what would you change to remove the distraction?
